While excitement and momentum build behind the clean energy transition and new net-zero targets emerge, the question of how to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors remains. The material economy (manufacturing, construction, mining, and waste) is responsible for nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The production of concrete, steel, and cement, account for more than half of these emissions. They also continue to be in high demand as the global population grows, emerging economies develop, and infrastructure investment accelerates. decarbonizing these verticals is paramount in the path to net-zero emissions by 2050.

As energy and transportation sectors accelerate their zero-emission activities, there is growing concern that the industrial sector will be much more difficult to decarbonize. As an example, steel production along accounts for around 10 percent emissions. Bill Gates stated in his book How to Prevent a Climate Disaster, “Making steel “The question, ‘What’s your plan for cement?’ is just a shorthand reminder that if you’re trying to come up with a comprehensive plan for climate change, you have to account for much more than electricity and cars.”

Women in Cleantech & Sustainability brings together a team of experts and thought-leaders to discuss solutions in industrial decarbonization, with a focus on sustainability in the cement, concrete, and steel sectors. We will discuss existing solutions, breakthroughs on the horizon, challenges to deployment, and reasons to get excited about industrial sustainability.
