Kate Raworth is a renegade economist focused on making economics fit for 21st century realities. In her book, Kate offers a new model for economics, based around the concept of the ‘doughnut’. The inner ring of the doughnut represents the minimum threshold of life's essentials (like healthcare, education, shelter, etc.) while the outer ring represents the ecological ceiling that life depends on and must not be overshot. Therefore, the sweet spot for humanity to thrive is inside the doughnut. The Doughnut framework is not just a theory, it is already being applied in cities like Amsterdam, and more.

The discussion will be moderated by Christina Jenq, PhD Economist and Natalie Zandt, WCS LA Chapter member and Founder and CEO of MeterLeader.

Christina Jenq

Ph.D Economist

Christina Jenq is a Ph.D.-trained labor and development economist. She received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and was formerly an Assistant Professor of Practice in Economics at NYU Shanghai. Her research studies gender inequality and political economy of gender. Christina is interested in incorporating considerations for resilience, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in climate initiatives. She currently consults, teaches, and advises on projects related to transitioning fossil fuel workers to the green economy, ESG indicators, carbon footprint analytics, and equitable deployment of “green” infrastructure.

Natalie Zandt

Founder & CEO of MeterLeader

Natalie Zandt is the Founder & CEO of MeterLeader, a web platform that gamifies saving energy at home using real-time utility (PG&E and SCE) and behavioral science. Prior to starting MeterLeader, Natalie worked as an energy efficiency consultant for over 6 years, implementing energy efficiency programs for utilities in California and Maryland. Natalie is passionate about combining her interests in technology, UX design, and behavioral science, in order to positively impact the environment. In her spare time, she enjoys reading science fiction, drawing, and hanging out at the beach.
